“My Space on 7th” featuring 88 local artists this Friday

All available spaces (88 artists selected 125 spaces for 300 or more artworks) were chosen within hours after registration opened. My Space on 7th is designed to tap into two significant community needs: 1) to give local, often emerging, artists the rare opportunity to exhibit at a very low investment; and 2) to offer collectors the equally rare opportunity to view new and often reasonably priced work.

Cory Oberndorfer: Flavor of the Month Coming this Friday

This Thursday @ Flashpoint is the opening of Cory Oberndorfer's Flavor of the Month!
Cory’s paintings combine the visual language of graphic design with the subculture of flat track roller derby. Oberndorfer elevates roller derby players to iconic status with bright colors and simplified, stripped-down forms. While having the look of mass production and silkscreen, these paintings are actually meticulously hand-painted.
Enjoy girls on skates, junk food and candy!

Word on the Street: Birch & Barley/ChurchKey coming to 14th Street

Neighborhood Restaurant Group (NRG) Owner Michael Babin plans a first quarter 2009 opening for the beer-centric destinations Birch & Barley and ChurchKey, both located on 14th St, NW in the former Dakota Cowgirl space at Logan Circle.
Looks like they are jumping across the river and about to take over DC.
These two openings mark the first foray into the District for the Virginia-based NRG, which operates Buzz, EatBar, Evening Star Café, Planet Wine, Rustico, Star Catering, Tallula and Vermilion, all located in Northern Virginia. The ground floor will house Birch & Barley, a beer-forward and wine-friendly restaurant headed by Executive Chef/Partner Frank Morales, who also will continue to oversee the kitchen at Alexandria’s Rustico. The modern American menu will pay homage to beer in every way, using it as an ingredient in most dishes, while also offering pairing suggestions that showcase the fresh, local products employed by Chef Morales. Upstairs, look for a new kind of beer haven at the 3,200 square-foot ChurchKey. Governed by Beer Director Greg Engert, who serves in the same position at Rustico, the bar will serve 555 different beers, including 500 bottles representing 100 styles and 30 countries.
Fifty drafts will be available, half of which will be American and 30 of which will rotate weekly. The beer selection will be rounded out by five authentic hand pumped cask conditioned ales representing rare English and other international styles, as well as domestic beers that are often not seen in DC. This Wednesday Capitol Pecha Kucha Vol. 6 - Sponsored by Bisnow

Organized and launched in March 2007 by Rouzita and Bita Vahhabaghai of ita-design and Yiselle M. Santos Rivera, Capitol Pecha Kucha promotes local DC creatives working in all media including the visual arts, architecture, design, music, fashion, film, and literature. The Pecha Kucha Night patented presentation system allows presenters 20 images each shown for 20 seconds - giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. Talks are concise, the interest level is constant, and more presenters receive the opportunity to share their work.
Pecha Kucha --Japanese for the sound of conversation-- taps into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown. The brainchild of Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, Klein Dytham architecture, Tokyo, began in 2003 as a forum for designers to meet, network, and show their current work to the public, and has since spread to over 150 cities across the world.
Please join them for Volume 6 which focuses on Change, specifically individuals who are addressing meaningful Global Issues in their work.

DC Charity Spotlight: Adventure Theatre

WISH LIST:
$100: costumes for 1 actor in a main-stage production;
$500: 4-session drama workshop at an inner-city school;
$1000: main-stage production for 200 Title I school students
The longest-running professional theatre for children and families in the Washington region, Adventure Theatre offers stage adaptations of classic children's stories -- from Jack and the Beanstalk to the Helen Hayes-nominated Goodnight Moon. But it also provides more: a book club where families read together and then watch the piece unfold before their eyes; an outreach project that pairs plays with community programs (Go, Dog Go joins Dog Adoption Day; Harold and the Purple Crayon sponsors a crayon recycling drive).
Discounted tickets and transportation bring 2,700 students from underserved communities to AT's weekly performances. Plays with a purpose -- one on civil war nurse and founder of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton, another on African American children in the civil rights movement -- tour at local schools, while after-school, weekend, and summer workshops give youngsters a chance to develop their theatrical selves. AT's professionals work with students to prepare and perform musical theater productions at elementary schools in Montgomery County -- and funding would allow the program to expand to DC schools. You can help bring up the lights!
