Coming Soon: Dining in the Dark

The List

Thank to THE LIST ARE YOU ON IT for this scoop. Dark Dining is coming to DC. This is something really different that's enjoying success in Europe. All service, eating and drinking will take place in the dark. You'll be served a fixed price three-course by blind or sight-impaired wait staff, in an absolute pitch-black dining room, specially designed for this purpose. Before you are led to the dining area you will be provided choices from a fixed price three-course menu.

The absolute darkness, allows you to concentrate solely on the sensations of taste, smell and touch. It also results in a rare reversal of roles, where sighted guests rely on blind or visually impaired waiters who have been trained to act as your guide for the evening. The dark-dining concept originated in Switzerland where Jorge Spielmann, a blind minister from Zurich, blindfolded dinner guests to give them a taste of his daily struggles. In 1999 he opened Blindekuh (Blind Cow), the world's first restaurant staffed exclusively by visually impaired waiters. Besides providing a unique dining experience, the restaurant created work opportunities for the blind, a group that faces 70% rates of unemployment in many developed countries. Look for this concept to open up in the next six weeks in Georgetown.
