VASTU welcomes the work of Colin Winterbottom and Gabriel Shuldiner

Colin Winterbottom

Featured among the dramatic, atmospheric photographs Colin Winterbottom shows are a series taken as he documented refurbishment of the pediments at the National Archives headquarters in Washington, DC.

Gabriel Shuldiner’s work uses his idea to mix unmatchable elements, slash boundaries, and create tensions between opposites. Simply put, his work is a (re)investigation of material and process, modes of production, and analysis. Gabriel highlights the subtle nuance of surface, support, space, form, density and mass, examining the role that context and perception play in visual experience. He explores a multitude of (sub)culturally relevant and timeless themes, among them nothingness, isolation/solitude, the transitory nature of things, the sublime, and the absurd.

Stop in today shop Vastu and preview both of the artists newest works.

Sweet Green Gets Some Competition as Mixt Greens Hits Dupont

This week Shira and I came across Mixt Greens, which is scheduled to open soon right next to our office. This eco-gourmet restaurant concept founded in San Francisco in 2005 will bring four new DC locations to DC in 2010. The first will open on January 26th at 1200 19th Street, NW.

Mixt Greens is a chef driven concept that features tossed-to-order, gourmet salads and handcrafted sandwiches served on organic, artisanal breads along with organic, house-made iced teas and lemonades. Each menu item is prepared by culinary-trained chefs under the leadership of Founder and Executive Chef Andrew Swallow.

The company is a leader in sustainable food sourcing, energy efficiency, composting, resource conservation, alternative energy and education. Mixt Greens will feature a modern, urban design incorporating earth-friendly materials and each location will include a new edible living wall of seasonally rotating herbs and vegetables.

In addition to the restaurant at 1200 19th Street, three venues will open between February and April, 2010 at 1311 F Street, NW, 1700 K Street, NW and 927 15th Street, NW.

Paper. Plastic. Or Canvas?

http://loveisdope.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/canvas-grocery-bag.jpg
In case you haven't been to the grocery store this year, don't be shocked when you receive a 5 cent charge for each plastic bag you require at checkout. Luckily, as a frequent shopper at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's I rarely have that problem and I always re-use those bags for trash later in the week.

In fact, I'm pretty anti-plastic bags and haven't bought trash bags since college. So jump on the green train and invest in a few canvas totes like these shown to take to the grocery store. Giant and Safeway also sell re-usuable totes at 99 cents for patrons.
