This Friday RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture at the National Portrait Gallery

Convinced the art world is stuffy and old-fashioned? Change your mind with a trip to the National Portrait Gallery on Friday, Feb. 8, when “RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture” opens and brings portraits into the 21st century. The exhibition features pieces ranging from traditional paintings to contemporary video installations by a variety of hip-hop influenced artists.

They’re hard to miss, but make sure you see the pair of 20-foot-long graffiti murals by D.C.-based Tim Conlon and Dave Hupp that lead guests into the exhibit. With paintings of hip-hop greats such as LL Cool J and Ice T, and photos featuring the likes of Erykah Badu and Common, it’s safe to say that this exhibit doesn't belong in your grandmother’s art gallery.

RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture, Friday, Feb. 8 through Sunday, Oct. 26, The National Portrait Gallery, Eighth and F Streets, 202.233.8300
