Shiny Toy Guns Hits Rock-N-Roll Hotel this Sunday: DC This Week Chats with Band Members

Los Angeles electro-rock outfit Shiny Toy Guns treks to the District on Sunday to the Rock-N-Roll Hotel straight off the release of their new album.

For their new project Ill, the band teamed up with legendary mixer Tony Maserati (Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys) to finalize and sharpen the new 2012 sound of the band. 

Over the years I’ve been to several of their concerts, given away tickets to DC This Week readers and this year I interviewed the band as they waited out Sandy and their re-scheduled DC concert.

Their male and female vocalists, Chad Petree and Carah Faye, took the time to answer a few questions for the STG fans patiently awaiting their arrival. Tickets tothe concert on Sunday are still on sale for $17 HERE. And all tickets from the re-scheduled show will be honored at entry.

I remember first hearing STG in San Fran on New Years, when We Are Pilots was one of the hottest records of the time. How has your music evolved since then?

“It has come through a hailstorm and 24 tornadoes. But now we are on the other side, blue skies.”

How have the changes in band members impacted the music over the years?

“The impact on our music wasn't based on the changing of singers in Shiny Toy Guns.  Our sound evolved due to the ever-changing life cycles we were going through.   Our second album Season of Poison was a dark time in our lives.   Though it is a damn good rock record, it wasn't something that should have been a Shiny Toy Guns record.  III is a Shiny Toy Guns record.”

Do you think this has impacted your fans and the type of music you produce?

“The original four is the best foundation we could ask for to make the best Shiny Toy Guns record we could.  And our loved ones are super happy we are back.”

Do the band members enjoy DC? What are some of your favorite places to dine or visit when you are in town?

“Very much so!”  There is this EPIC Ethiopian place right by the 9:30 Club.  It’s so amazing. And we used to love to go to this club called Buzz from back in the day ran by this guy named Scott Henry.  He is awesome.”

Tell me about the recent album, its inspiration and which song you are most thrilled to share with your fans and new listeners who may not have had the chance to see you in person before?

“I think this changes day by day because for the first time we are taking the new album on the road.   Sometimes "Wait For Me" is the winner.  Sometimes it’s "Speaking Japanese" or "Somewhere To Hide" is always hot live.  It kind of depends on the room, the kids, the city.”

What is one of your most memorable times on tour as a band?

“When we get the opportunity to listen to people share stories about their lives with us after shows.   That is pretty much equal par to how much we get off playing live.”

A moment that will remain embedded in your memory forever.

“I won't forget this…It was 4:00 a.m.  I was sitting in a hot tub in the far north of Alaska, inside the Arctic Circle with two beautiful Eskimo girls with pink mohawks.  And Carah was running around a massive mansion in the woods with our video camera.  And Chad was in a fishing boat going like 30 knots across a lake with a pole in one hand and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s in the other.  How could you ever forget that night?    #alaskafire.”
