No one can argue that 14th Street blooms with art and creativity. And the Dunes has been an instrumental part in packing District venues with the works of artists, photographers and musicians, from near and far. Their newest endeavor - Art Crimes - a monthly series of installations will be the first the grace the walls of Gibson giving patrons a private viewing of the bar, its savory drinks and bites. Each month they will open with photography, paintings, sculpture and other wall-mounted work by artists from the DC area and beyond. Pieces will be sublime, reasonably-priced and on display for four weeks.
At each opening, Jon Harris and his crew at the Gibson will design a custom cocktail menu and savory food pairings -- all of this while DJ SoulCall Paul spins that raw, gritty 50s-60s soul from the days of wayback. No entrance fee. And, yes, Mona is packing heat in the logo; come to the openings and you'll understand why.
This Wednesday check out the first installation from will be by DC-based photographer Sam Vasfi, presenting his series: Flâneur
Flâneur is French for "stroller", "lounger", "saunterer", "loafer" and is derived from the French verb flâner, which means "to stroll." Charles Baudelaire developed his own personal meaning for the term flâneur—"a person who walks the city in order to experience it." Fast‐forward to present day Paris as we experience the city through the lens of Sam Vasfi, a modern day flâneur. During his recent stay in Paris, Sam learned to embody Baudelaire’s definition. Paris is a city designed to be experienced on foot. The expanses of architecture, of people, of culture and of history that occupy every street make the City of Lights a destination unlike any other and demand that the visitor slow his pace to match the heartbeat of the city. With each new view he stumbled upon, Sam found a perfect opportunity to use the photographic techniques that have come to define his work.
This show is a collection of photographs from both Paris and Chartres, a small town located 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of Paris best known for its cathedral Our Lady of Chartres.
