Devotion in the District: Photographic Explorations of Places of Worship by Maria Bryk Opening Show this Friday @ The Gallery at Social

Our nation’s capital is a mosaic of ethnicities and beliefs, with rich cultural traditions running strong. Over the past year, DC-based photographer Maria Bryk has visited some of the District's most vibrant places of worship to capture the diverse religious and spiritual practices in and around the city. This exhibit will feature a display of powerful imagery, which will provoke discussion and thought about the expression of devotion, faith and spirtuality.

Maria Bryk is a 2010 Young Artist Grant recipient from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. She has created photojournalistic essays on a multitude of themes, including campesinos in Paraguay, Parisian street culture, Eastern Shore watermen and diverse religious practices here in DC. Apart from her travels and independent work, Maria is a graphic designer/photographer for the Newseum in Washington, DC. She covers events, live tapings and designs publications for the museum. She was featured in Art202 Journal’s “Thirty-two under 32” as a local young artist.
