DC Charity Spotlight: Community Help In Music Education (CHIME)

 2005/dc_181.jpg

It all began as a memorial to a talented young daughter: first Dorothy Marschak helped provide free music lessons for children in Berkeley, California, and years later, as a docent for the National Symphony Orchestra, she was moved to help again--this time by the responsiveness of DCPS children in Title I schools who were eager for music education. Soon, CHIME was born and it continues to expand its repertoire. Music Around the World teaches schoolchildren about the music of different cultures and lets them experience many new instruments, often for the very first time. Intensive, integrated, in-school music programming and ongoing instructional support are on the agenda for this year. CHIME also offers professional development workshops for teachers, and sponsors an instrument donation program--Band Aid for DC Public Schools--distributing instruments in good repair (125 to date) to worthy students. City wide summer music programs at 12 sites reach many hundreds, and also include employment opportunities for older youth. Funded, through CHIME's efforts, by the City Council, DCPS will budget them in the future: what an accomplishment! A joint project with American University and the Smithsonian's Anacostia museum documents the “glory days” of public school music ensembles--and advocates bringing those glory days back. Let us all chime in!

DC This Week is on HOLD until Monday and Dreaming about Wallpaper

Pleasure Dome
As the condo buying process moves along.........SLOWWWWLYYYY I've been brainstorming on backsplashes for the kitchen and wallpaper for the hallway. Flavor League wallpaper, based out of New Orleans and New York City, has the pick of the liter when it comes to decking out your space. And they've even outfitted a few of the hottest clubs in DC from Josephine (where I celebrated my 26th birthday) to Napoleon (where I celebrated my 27th birthday). I'm seeing a pattern here............ DC This Week is hold for the next few days so I leave you with a few of my favorites from Flavor.

Do you know where your Champagne comes from? Unmask the truth. Demand accurate labeling.

Masquerading as Champagne...

When it comes to wine, there is no ingredient more important than location. The land, air, water and weather where grapes are grown are what make each wine unique. That is why we, as wine enthusiasts, demand that a wine’s true origin be clearly identified on its label in order for us to make informed decisions when purchasing and consuming wine. This ensures we know where our wine comes from and protects the sanctity of wine growing regions worldwide.

By signing, you are joining the growing list of Joint Declaration to Protect Wine Place & Origin signatories – Champagne, Chianti Classico, Jerez, Napa Valley, Oregon, Paso Robles, Sonoma County, Porto, Tokaj, Victoria, Walla Walla Valley, Washington State, Western Australia – and a growing list of consumers in demanding that wine labels maintain and protect the integrity of wine place names, which are fundamental tools for consumers to identify the special wines of great winegrowing regions.
