MY HELSKINKI Art Exhibition @ the Finnish Embassy Guest list is CLOSED.

According to Going out Guru's "Earlier this year, the Finnish government invited 12 Washingtonians, including jazz musician and educator Davey Yarborough, video artist Ayodamola Okunseinde and Restaurant Nora owner Nora Pouillon, to come to Helsinki, and paired them with host organizations. The 12 then documented their experiences in a new exhibit called "My Helsinki" at the Finnish Embassy, which runs through the end of the month. Check out the results tonight at a happy hour and party with food, drinks and a set by DJ Adrian Loving, which runs from 7 to 10."

Celebrating DC art and music teachers with the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative.

bike-stand-copy1

On Thursday, The DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative is gathering to celebrate those teachers who work hard to find a place for arts in every school and for every child. More than 80 DC public school art and music teachers will join for a recognition event at the Goethe Institute. I'm lucky to have lots of friends and associates in the city who are remarkable artists and photographers. So I reached out to a few of them, including Patrick Ryan, Susan Finsen, Marielle Mariano and Joshua Titkin of DEKKA and asked them to consider donating a piece of art to the event.

I was inspired when all of them said yes! Their pieces of art will go as a gift to lucky art and music teahers at the appreciation event. The Arts For Every Student (AFES) Teacher Celebration will acknowledge the hard work of educators who serve as AFES program leaders at 120 DC public and chartered schools.

Through their efforts, in 2008 more than 33,000 public school students have experienced the arts and humanities through the DC Collaborative’s 80 members from the local arts and cultural community. Students have seen the treasures of the Corcoran Gallery, soared along with internationally-renown dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company, and experienced classroom lessons that incorporate design and artistry into typical math, science and reading classes.

Patrick Ryan, one of my favorite DC photographers donated the piece (pictured above) “Untitled [Bike Rack/Storm Rolling In On Jersey Shore]". In Patrick's own words............................

"I’m very proud of this image. A few years back, it was selected for a juried exhibition by Kathleen Ewing, a respected photo gallery owner in Washington who was Executive Director of The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) at the time. "

Students from the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, who have also benefited from the hard work of their classroom teachers and the DC Collaborative, will be on hand to perform during the reception. Attendees will include teachers, administrators and representatives from DCPS central administration and from the chartered public schools.

Patrick, Susan, Marielle and Joshua are a few of the many talented artists and photographers in the city. And their donations truly show the artistic spirit and collaboration that can take place when we come together as an art community and philanthropic DCers! Prost to them all. Jade

Signature Theatre of Arlington Wins 2009 Regional Theatre Award. A Tony Award® !

The Tony Awards® administrative committee has announced the honorees for the four non-competitive categories which will be presented at the 2009 Tony Awards on June 7th. The 2009 Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing.

The 2009 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre will be presented to Tony Award winning composer and lyricist, Jerry Herman. Mr. Herman composed the scores for such Broadway musicals as Hello, Dolly!, Mame and La Cage aux Folles. He is a five-time Tony Award nominee and two time Tony Award winner, for La Cage aux Folles and Hello, Dolly!

The 2009 Regional Theatre Award will be awarded to the Signature Theatre of Arlington, Virginia. Each year, the Tony Awards present a Tony Award to a regional theatre on the recommendation of the American Theatre Critics Association. The Award is accompanied by a gift of $25,000 from VISA, USA, a proud sponsor of the Tony Awards for the past decade. For 20 years, Signature Theatre has broadened and brightened the region's cultural landscape with its bold productions of challenging new and established works.

The recipient of the newly created Isabelle Stevenson Award is Tony Award winning actress Phyllis Newman. The Isabelle Stevenson Award recognizes an individual from the theatre community who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations, regardless of whether such organizations relate to the theatre. In 1995, Ms. Newman founded The Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative of The Actor’s Fund of America. For the last 12 years she has raised more than $3.5 million dollars that has helped to serve 2,500 women in the entertainment industry.

Shirley Herz will receive the Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre. For more than 50 years, Ms. Herz has been a press agent to both on and Off-Broadway working behind-the-scenes to publicize more than 200 shows and help make both the shows and their stars house-hold names. Established in 1990, The Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre are awarded annually to institutions, individuals and/or organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in theatre, but are not eligible in any of the established Tony Award categories.

The Tony Award Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, May 5th. A complete list of the 2008-2009 Tony Award Nominees will be available at www.tonyawards.com on May 5th.
