Sixteen years ago, children with developmental and physical disabilities had few opportunities for recreation in the Washington, DC area. Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN) changed all that with a simple idea: pair a trained volunteer coach with an athlete with disabilities, and let them discover together what they can do.
With help from a handful of parents and volunteers, KEEN started with one sports program in 1992. Today, KEEN offers fourteen sports and recreation programs in the greater DC area to more than 225 children with any type of disability, including significant disabilities, such as autism, cerebral palsy or Down syndrome. In 2005, KEEN expanded nationally with KEEN USA affiliates now open in 7 cities across the country. What makes KEEN unique is that we accept every child including kids with extensive disabilities into our programs and do so at no charge. At KEEN, every child can come out and play!
