Be Green with Green Cup Polo this Saturday

On July 19th (rain or shine) 2008 The Capitol Polo Club will host the second annual Green Cup of Polo to raise awareness of environmental issues and benefit four prominent environmental organizations: ACORE (American Council On Renewable Energy), EPIC (Equestrian Partners in Conservation), Live Green, and EarthEcho International. The Green Cup brings together polo enthusiasts, top DC-environmentalists, business leaders, elected representatives, diplomats, horse lovers, fashionistas, and socialites.

This year's event will feature two matches, cuisine from the city's top organic and sustainable restaurants and cafes, entertainment by Great Falls Vaulters and the World's Children Choir, a live performance by Pocket Band as well as offer a full day of surprises. Bring family and friends to a tailgating party, sip 'Ecotinis' in the member's club area, or enjoy view of the field from our prime seats in the VIP area. No matter what your choice is, we promise you a wonderful day of festivities, fun, and two action-packed polo matches.

HOW CAN DC BE GREEN?

The Green Cup of Polo is one of Washington DC’s first social event to incorporate green principles. To be true to its mission, the event management incorporates green intelligent practices to decrease the event’s ecological footprint as much as possible. Some of these principles include:

  • Purchasing carbon offsets for the energy used at the event as well as the transportation to the event.

  • Serving organic and sustainably harvested food in the VIP, hospitality tents, and general admission areas.

  • Offering organic and sustainably produced beverages in the VIP area, hospitality tents, and general admission areas.

  • All t-shirts for volunteers are fair-trade and produced from organic cotton, and printed with soy- or vegetable-based ink.

  • All marketing material and the program are printed on at least 30 percent post-consumer recycled paper with soy- or vegetable-based ink.

  • Offering recycling and composting during the event.

  • All serviceware is biodegradable and will be composted

  • Cleaning of the grandstand is done by an eco-friendly cleaning company, which uses biodegradable and environmentally friendly cleaning products.

  • Environmental education: the event will showcase environmental organizations and corporations that promote green living.

  • Reusable VIP bags
