DC Charity Spotlight: Bright Beginnings

Imagine a toddler who doesn’t know where she will eat lunch and worries if she will be safe at night. Homeless children growing up on the move are at risk for acquiring just about any problem you can name, and often begin school with developmental disadvantages that create life-long learning problems.

Bright Beginnings is a child development center offering Head Start and Early Head Start programs that reach 186 very young children – with counseling, speech therapy, and pre-literacy learning –while parents work during the day and attend school in the evening. Over 1,000 families have benefited from this comprehensive care, but many more are in need. Since it was first featured in the Catalogue in 2003, the Early Learning Evening Care Program added 36 slots to accomodate homeless and low-income working families with non-traditional hours, and a second center in Ward 7 or 8, serving 100 infants and toddlers, is in the works. Offering a family a bright beginning can lead to a lifetime of success: your support can start something extraordinary.
