Know any good hotels in Rome?

So the Craiganator and I are going to Rome in late April. We literally are packing huge back packs, have no plan of action and we will stay where the wind takes us. Anyone have any advice on hotels on the cheap? Places to see? We anticipate hopping on the train and just having fun. Please shoot me a comment if you have suggestions. Prost!
