Wrap Juleps Around This: Morrison House Premieres New Happy Hour

Way back in 1803, The Mint Julep first appeared in print described as a "dram of spirituous liquor that has mint in it, taken by Virginians in the morning." What better place than the Grille at Morrison House located in Old Town, Alexandria, to savor this legendary drink?

From the traditional to the contemporary, the Julep is a highlight of the cocktail menu at this favorite Alexandria haunt. Beginning December 10th, maybe not first thing in the morning, but definitely from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, The Grille’s happy hour features The Flight of the Julep ($5)—a taste of each of three different Julep’s from the restaurant’s cocktail menu—Traditional-made with Makers Mark Bourbon muddled mint and peach syrup; Blackberry Mint Julep-a tempting mix of Buffalo Trace Bourbon muddled blackberries and mint; and Whisky Pineapple Julep-a slightly tropical bent on the classic, made with Bulleit Bourbon muddled pineapple and mint. As for cocktails, signature drinks such as the Moho Runner, Pear Sage Mojito and Pomegranate Margarita, as well as favorite traditional cocktails are priced at $5.

For those seeking great wines and brews, specially selected red and white wines will be available at $5 per glass and a foamy mug of Harpoon UFO or Sierra Nevada beer will be offered at $3. Better yet—happy hour hors d’oeuvres created just for this occasion by The Grille’s own Chef Dennis Marron ($6 each) including escargot gratin with basil pesto, grilled bread & roasted garlic; artisanal cheese selection, with truffle honey, seasonal preserves; truffled pomme frites with fleur de sel; and oysters Rockefeller, baked oysters with traditional herb butter sauce.
