It’s after 10 p.m. In fact, it’s after midnight. The late movie has just let out; the theatrical performance is a thing of the past; the event of the evening had a few less hors d’oeuvres than one might have hoped. Growling stomachs can be heard from Capitol Hill to Kalorama. But the night is young, and there’s still a little spring in the step. As the intrepid diner goes from door to door—tables are cleared and restaurants are dark. There’s not a bite to be had. Back home, the fridge has a cherry tomato and some fuzzy pasta in it—that’s about all. What to do?
The lights are on and the fun is just beginning at Hudson Restaurant and Lounge at 2030 M Street in DC’s West End. Until 2 a.m. weekdays; 3 a.m. weekends and midnight on Sundays, the kitchen is bustling churning out everything from steaming pasta Bolognese to gourmet burgers plain or stuffed with a choice of six fillings, entrée salads from grilled Caesar to Nicoise, brick oven pizzas topped to suit meat lover or vegetarians, mouth watering omelets, creamy mussels, steaming soups, a variety of ‘Sliders’ and more. It’s never too late for a full meal or a satisfying snack—neither the ovens nor the sidewalk roll up at 10.
The dining experience continues behind and at the bar, as mix-meister John Hogan presents an ingredient-driven cocktail menu. Gastro-cocktails include such libations as the House-made Tonic & Gin-- Plymouth gin and Hogan’s house-made tonic, hand-charged seltzer water and a squeeze of fresh lime; A Better Two Pear-- Absolut pear vodka, Bartlett & prickly pear puree, house made sour mix, dehydrated pear wheel, dash of mint bitters. Among updated classics available are the legendary Pimm’s Cup, Side Car and Jostedals Glacier Martini-- Christiania organic potato vodka, Italian vermouth, stirred glacier cold, straight up with molecular blue cheese “spheres.”
